EGP-Spokespersons Lunacek and Lamberts: Illegal prison camps and kidnapping of terrorist suspects is unacceptable
For European Green Party Spokeswoman Ulrike Lunacek it is "essential" that the Austrian EU-Presidency "unambiguously" demands from US-President Bush at today's EU-US-Summit in Vienna that the illegal prison camp in Guantánamo be closed, and that the US stop eroding the international agreements on the absolute prohibition of torture. "Apart from the closure of Guantánamo it will be necessary to secure judicial procedures according to legal standards and the option for return of prisoners to their home countries - without fear of torture, persecution or inhuman treatment," Lunacek affirms.
For Philippe Lamberts, EGP Spokesman, "the US and the EU member state governments must closely cooperate in order to investigate any abuse that the Central Intelligence Agency and other US Secret Services may have committed under the cover of the fight against terrorism. Abduction and torture are simply not acceptable means in this fight; on the contrary, they can only strengthen the resolution of the terrorists. If the EU is to retain its credibility when it advocates the development of democracy and the rule of law across the world, it can in no way remain silent or ambiguous when the United States are involved."
The European Green Party Spokespersons reiterated the European Greens' position that the EU and its member states have to refrain from acting against their own values and principles if they want to be convincing defenders of human rights at the global level. Lunacek and Lamberts also demanded that, now the European Court of Justice has declared the request of the US unconstitutional - the EU take a firm stance on US demands to deliver airline passenger data.
